The Better Public Building initiative was launched by the Prime Minister in 2000 to encourage high-quality design in all new public building. The Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award is made annually, since 2001, to a new building project of any size and budget commissioned by or on behalf of central or local government or by a grant-aided organisation and is a special category within the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA). The Award is sponsored jointly by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (formerly the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - BERR). The website is administered by CABE.
