Description

Folios 257-264. Letter dated at Lisburn from the Duke of Schomberg to the King. As ordered he has sent the cavalry officers to recruit and restore their regiments. He is glad the Danish cavalry is not coming too soon as there is not enough to support the cavalry already here. He complains of [William] Harbord's conduct in leaving him without money, says that Harbord played a similar trick at Dundalk and when things go wrong makes his escape. Schomberg hopes that arrangements can be made with Pereya or others 'here' for carrying provisions for 25,000 men for 20 days. Schomberg says that in his last letter the reasons he gave to the troops in Enniskillen and Derry to show it was not just they should be paid as the English troops in Ireland. He says 'the Irish officers, mostly peasants, are paid too highly'. Monsieur Scravenmoer has inspected the cavalry in County Down; the regiments of Delamere, Devonshire and Hewett are all officered by men who never saw any campaign 'but this last'. Schomberg's says he never puts any of the French [Huguenots] among the English unless the latter desire it. Colonels Romagnac and Louvigny; Captain St Sauveur; his aide-de-camp Monsieur de Cagny; Monsieur Lestang; Ingoldsby's Regiment; Colonel Sir Henry Ingoldsby; Lord Wharton; Lord Shrewsbury; Lieutenant-General Douglas; Count De Solms 'too haughty to be liked in this army, but that might be overlooked on account of his capacity'; Van Humery [Bartholomew Van Homrigh]; Captain Kennedy; Lord Crawford; Lieutenant-Colonel Beverley of Hewett's Regiment; and [Captain] Shales are mentioned.
