Folios 120-121. Letter dated at Lisburn from Major-General Scravenmoer to [blank]. I returned last night from Monaghan, where I should have stayed longer had not the Duke [of Schomberg] sent thither Mr Douglas to arrange matters generally and to purchase corn from Donegal. Condition of provisions. I pray you tell the King not to allow the Danish cavalry to come over before the spring, as it is impossible to support the cavalry already here. By the loss of Sligo, we have lost the means of providing for more than half our cavalry. Relations with Schomberg. You will be extremely surprised to learn that 'Le Generall Major [Justin] McCarthy' [Lord Mountcashel], always supposed to be an honest man has, contrary to his word and writing, deserted [and escaped to Dublin after being parolled following his capture at the Battle of Newtownbutler]. I think that too much liberty was allowed him by Schomberg: You see what value is to be placed on the word of the Irish! Two captains have gone with him. We endeavour to induce Schomberg to imprison the rest of the officers or to send them to Carrickfergus Castle; I do not know if he has given order for this. I am daily disappointed in receiving his promised instructions. Hopes that the King will give orders as well for the artillery as for the provisions, without which they cannot pass the defiles of Newry to come to Dundalk. Describes the condition of supplies and the prices to be paid for them. Monsieur St Sauveur, who distinguished himself at the siege of Sligo, tells me that Monsieur de la Melonière wishes to make his major 'qui est un fort miserable homme' [who is a very miserable man] his lieutenant-colonel, although St Sauveur had received a previous promise of promotion; hopes the king will consider his disappointment.
