Description

Folios 89-92. Letter dated at Dundalk from the Duke of Schomberg to the King. Folios 89-91. The Duke's French secretary has fallen sick. Describes the four regiments arrived from Scotland; Hastings' troop does not consist of 300 soldiers. The enemy cannot be forced to battle on account of the nature of the country. Unless arrangements are made here, similar to those in France and Flanders, for furnishing supplies at fixed prices, it will not be possible to sustain this war. Expresses his devotion to the King, which induces him to endure so many hardships. Folios 91-92. Most of the enemy's army has marched towards Drogheda, except eight regiments of infantry and one of cavalry, left in a fortification made at Ardee. From what can be learnt from deserters and the country people a number of them are dead. Yesterday he sent away some of the regiments. He would have sent the whole army if he had dared to quit Dundalk where the sick are in ships which cannot sail because of contrary winds and are at risk of be of being burnt by the enemy. He is surprised at not hearing anything of [Major-General Charles] Trelawny's descent on the 'parts of Kinsale.' Schomberg can hardly believe that the enemy suspected Trelawney's movement, as they sent a large detachment from Sligo, where Colonel Russell has lost some men. Russell, having stayed six days at Enniskillen, with the troops with which lie left here ?, has retired to Ballyshannon. Schomberg has sent from Dundalk all the Enniskillen troops, [Sir John] Lanier with his regiment and that of Hesfoot [Colonel Anthony Heyford].
