Part 2, Folios 171-172. Resolution of the States of Holland and West Friesland regarding the political situation arising from the absence of the Prince of Orange in England. Wednesday 2 February 1689. Extract of the decisions of the sovereign states of Holland and West-Friesland taken in their noble and all powerful assembly. Relates to the election by the Council of Holland of seven persons for the positions of Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Amsterdam, from a list of 14 submitted by the City Council. Despite the privileges apparently granted to the City of Amsterdam to proceed with this, Lord van den Hove (President of the Council of Holland) and Lord Pensionaris Boris van Waveren decided that the election could not proceed in the absence of the Prince of Orange (as Stadthouder/Governor of the province). Consequently, important business could not go ahead e.g. Courts could not sit or were unsupervised, liens could not be registered or released. In these circumstances, the deputies of the city of Amsterdam requested that the Prince of Orange order Lord van dan Hove to order immediately the required election or failing that that for the Prince to hold the election himself.
