Description

Folios: 447v-448v. Charters of kings. Exemplification, made by Richard II at the request of John, duke of Lancaster [John of Gaunt], of a charter of Edward I, dated at Westminster on 28 Oct 22 Edw. I.

First party: Richard II.

Place or Subject: Whereas Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln and constable of Chester, quitclaimed to the king all the castles, lands and tenements which he had in the counties of Lancaster and Chester, and also the manor of Kyngeston [Kingston Lacy], Dorset, and similarly granted that the manor of Slaykeburn [Slaidburn] in Bouland [Bowland] with the whole forest and chase and also the manor of Snayth [Snaith] with soke in Yorkshire, and all other lands and tenements which Alice de Lacy, mother of the earl, holds in dower in Lancashire of the earl's inheritance, which after her death ought to revert to the earl and his heirs, are to revert and remain to the king and his heirs forever after her death, and concerning which lands and tenements that Alice holds in dower, she, by assignment of the earl, made an oath of fealty to the king. To hold to the king and his heirs with knights' fees, advowsons of churches, chapels, abbeys, priories and hospitals, homages, services of freeholders and villeins, demesne lands, forests, chases, parks, warrens, fisheries, cow-pastures, manors, hamlets and members, hundreds, wapentakes, liberties, royalties and free customs and all other things, which the earl and Alice had before the said demise and assignment in Lancashire and Cheshire, without any reservation forever. The king, for the laudable service which the earl has given to him, grants him all the said castles, lands and tenements in Lancashire and Cheshire, and also the manor of Kyngeston [Kingston Lacy]. The king also grants that the manor of Slaidburn in Bowland, with the whole forest and chase, and the manor of Snaith with its soke in Yorkshire, and also all the other said lands and tenements which Alice holds of the king in dower in Lancashire by assignment of the earl, and which after her death ought to revert to the king and his heirs after her death, are to entirely revert and remain to the earl and his heirs in tail.
