Folios: 444-447v. Charters of kings. Exemplification by Richard II of charters. 1. A charter, dated at Westminster on 25 June 46 Edw. III, made by Edward III to John, duke of Lancaster, about lands, which he had in exchange for the earldom of Richmond. 2. A charter, dated at Shene [Sheen] on 4 June 51 Edw. III.

Place or Subject: 1. Charter, indented, made between Edward III and John, king of Castile and Leon, duke of Lancaster, his son, witnesses that, whereas the king appointed John as earl of Richmond and granted the earldom of Richemond and the honor, castles, manors, lands, tenements and all other places pertaining to the earldom, which John, late duke of Britanny and earl of that place, had there, to John, king of Castile, by the name of the earl of Richmond, to hold to him and his heirs in tail, now John grants of his own free will that the earldom, honor, castles, manors, lands, tenements and places and also knights' fees belonging to it, and similarly advowsons, together with members, hamlets, meadows, pastures, fisheries, moors, marshes, turbaries, chases, parks, woods, warrens, hundreds, wapentakes, fairs, markets, liberties, free customs, escheats and all other things pertaining to the earldom, should be handed over to his father. The king, wishing to make suitable recompense to John in support of his status, has granted to him the castle, manor and honor of Tikhill [Tickhill], the castle and manor of Alto Pecco [High Peak], with knights' fees thereunto pertaining, and all fees which the king of England had from the gift and grant of Robert de Lisle, knight, knights' fees, which are in the king's hands as extinct, only excepted; and also the advowsons of the churches of Steyndrop [Staindrop] and Braunspath [Brancepeth] in the bishopric of Durham and of the free chapels of Tikhill [Tickhill] and Alto Pecco [High Peak], and of the church of Marsfeld [Maresfield], of the free chapel there, of the free chapel within the castle of Pevenese [Pevensey], of the priory of Wilmyngdon [Wilmington], which is a cell of the abbey of St Mary of Greston in Normandy, and of the priory of Withiam, which is a cell of the abbey of St Martin of Meremest Turon, and of the house of St Robert of Knaresburgh [Knaresborough]; the castle, manor and honor of Knaresburgh [Knaresborough] and the hundred or wapentake of Staynclif [Staincliffe], Yorks; the manors of Grynglay [Gringley] and Whetelay [Wheatley], Notts; the manors of Wighton, Ailesham [Aylsham], Fakenhamdam [Fakenham] and Snetesham [Snettisham], and also the hundreds of Northgrenehowe [North Greenhoe], Northerpyngham [North Erpingham], Sutherpyngham [South Erpingham] and Smethedon [Smithdon], Norf and Suff; the manors of Glatton and Holm [Holme], Hunts; the manor of Saham [Soham], Cambs; the castle and lowy of Pevenese [Pevensey] and the manors of Wilyndon [Willingdon] and Marsfeld [Maresfield], and also the bailiwick of Endelenewyk [Endlewick], Sussex; and the free chase of the High Peak, which the king held in his hands as forest, to be held as a free chase; and the free chase of Asshedon [Ash Down] with rights and liberties pertaining to free chases, and a yearly farm of 200 marks, which the abbot and convent of St Mary, York, are held to pay to the king and his heirs for the manor of Whitegift [Whitgift]. 2. Another charter made by Edward III to the king's uncle. Whereas the king lately granted to John, king of Castile and Leon, duke of Lancaster, the castle, manor and honor of Tickhill and other lands, to hold to him and his heirs in tail in exchange for the earldom of Richmond, and now John has entreated the king that, whereas the vill of Grenstede [Grinstead], which, as parcel of the manor of Marsfeld [Maresfield], the vill of Seford [Seaford], which, as parcel of the castle and lowy of Pevensey, and the vill of Laghton in Morthyng [Laughton-en-le-Morthen], which as parcel of the castle and honor of Tickhill, were delivered to him in the said exchange, with no special mention being made of those vills in this charter, they are three large separate places not pertaining to the manor of Maresfield, the castle of Pevensey and the castle of Tickhill, nor at any time were they [further details given]. The king grants to John the said vills of Grenstede [Grinstead], Seford [Seaford] and Laghton [Laughton-en-le-Morthen] with all their appurtenances, although they are large, whether they pertain to the manor of Maresfield, the castle of Pevensey and the castle and honor of Tickhill, and John is to have and retain them together with the castle, manor and honor of Tickhill and the other lands and tenements given to him by the king, as is aforesaid, and liberties, quittances and immunities, below written, which the king granted to Philippa, late queen of England, his wife, in those lands, which she held for her life.
