Second Party: John, king of Castile and Leon, duke of Lancaster, the king's uncle [John of Gaunt].
Place or Subject: Whereas John received at the Receipt of the Exchequer diverse sums of money from Edward III, the king's grandfather, and of the present king from a loan upon his pledges and reward and those of his men, who were assigned to serve Edward III and Richard II in a certain voyage made by the king's uncle upon the sea and at Seint Malowes [St Malo], and in two voyages made by him similarly in the king's service for two days in the marches of Scotland upon the king's business. Which sums run by him at the Exchequer to the king's use in demand. Books and memoranda, by which accounts ought to be rendered from the first two voyages, were made and written by certain of his clerks, who are dead, and these books and memoranda had been burnt in his manor of Sauvoye [Savoy] at the time at which certain men had last made an insurrection against the king's peace. [Further details given]. John has entreated the king to pardon him those sums and accounts which he is held to render to the king. The king, by reason of his uncle's good service, etc, pardons him all kinds of sums of money and accounts, as abovesaid.
