Second Party: John, king of Castile and Leon and duke of Lancaster [John of Gaunt].
Place or Subject: Whereas the king lately granted to John by his charter, indented, the castle, manor and honor of Tikhill [Tickhill] and other lands and tenements specified in that charter, to hold to him and his heirs in tail in exchange for the earldom of Richemund [Richmond] and the honor, castles, manors, lands, tenements and all other places pertaining to the earldom, and now John has entreated the king that, whereas the vill of Grenstede [Grinstead], which, as parcel of the manor of Marsfeld [Maresfield], the vill of Seford [Seaford], which, as parcel of the castle and lowy of Pevenseye [Pevensey], and the vill of Laghton in Morthyng [Laughton-en-le-Morthen], which as parcel of the castle and honor of Tikhill [Tickhill], were delivered to him in this exchange, with no special mention being made of those vills in that charter, they are three large separate places not pertaining to the manor of Marsfeld [Maresfield], the castle of Pevensey and the castle and honor of Tikhill [Tickhill], nor were they at any time [further details given]. The king grants the vills of Grenstede [Grinstead], Seford [Seaford] and Laghton [Laughton-en-le-Morthen] to John with all their appurtenances, although they are large, whether they pertain to the manor of Marsfeld [Maresfield], the castle of Pevensey and the castle and honor of Tikhill [Tickhill], and John is to have and retain them together with the castle, manor and honor of Tikhill [Tickhill] and the other lands and tenements, given to him by the king, as is aforesaid, and liberties, quittances and immunities, below written, which the king granted to Philippa, late queen of England, his wife, in those lands, which she held for her life.
