Description

Folios: 424-424v. Charters of privileges. Inspeximus by Henry III of a charter of King John, his father, dated at Vernol' on 19 July 1 John, and grant of liberties.

First party: Henry III.

Second Party: Roger de Quency, earl of Winchester.

Place or Subject: King John granted and ordered that Robert, earl of Leicester, and his heirs after him were to have and hold of the king and his heirs all his lands and fees with all liberties and free customs well and in peace, and honourably, free and quit from suits of shires and hundred and the aid of sheriffs, etc, and from giving money for murder and robbery, and from [giving] money pertaining to frankpledge. In addition, the king granted to them 'thol and theam, infangenethef, soc and sac', and quittance about his demesnes throughout the king's demesnes from pontage, passage, toll, toll paid by travellers, payage, stallage, tallage, gelds and danegeld, 'blodwyt, fychtwyt', and works of castles, walls, bridges, parks, ditches, causeways and houses. And they were to have their free chase of Wysselay and Wynberneholt [Wimborne Holt] and the taking of venison in those woods, which was awarded to him by lawful knights in the king's court at Westminster in the first year of the king's reign. And the king granted that those woods are to be quit of waste and regard.
