Place or Subject: The duke has entreated to the king that, whereas he holds the earldom of Richmond and all castles, honors, hundreds, manors, lands and tenements belonging to it, to him and his heirs in tail from the king's gift, in such a way that if he dies without heirs in tail, the eardom is to revert entirely to the king and his heirs, the duke, who has now set out to the parts of Gascony in the king's service, has borrowed diverse sums of money from several people for his passage towards those parts, for which William of Wykeham, clerk, Godfrey Foliambe, William Croiser, Walter de Campeden, clerk, William de Bughbrigg, clerk, and Robert de Morton are obliged and bound to pay diverse creditors on behalf of the duke, and it will be suitable that, while it happens the duke to be staying outside this realm, they are bound and obliged to very many creditors for other sums. For greater security of the payment of those sums and the indempnity of these creditors, the king gives his son licence to give and grant the manors of Boughes [Bowes], Argilgarth [Arkengarthdale], Forset [Forcett], Aldeburgh [Aldborough], Gillyng [Gilling], Multon [Moulton], Danby, Kateryk [Catterick], Baynbrigg [Bainbridge], Hope, Whassyngburn [Washingborough], Frampton, Ledenham [Leadenham], Wykes, Swafham Market [Swaffham Market], Bassyngbourn [Bassingbourn], Chestehunt [Cheshunt], Burgherssh [Burwash], Bevilham and Crowehirst [Crowhurst] with appurtenances, the vill of St Botulph [Boston], the honor of Badburgham [Babraham], also the sokes of Kirketon [Kirton], Skirbek [Skirbeck], Gayton and Mumby, and the rape of Hastynges [Hastings] with appurtenances, which are members and parcels of the earldom and are held of the king in chief, as it is said, and also one messuage with appurtenances in Boston called Gysorshalle and the wapentakes of Hangest [Hang East], Hangwest [Hang West], Gillyngest [Gilling East], Gillyngwest [Gilling West] and Harekild [Halikeld] with appurtenances, which are of the duke's purchase and are similarly held of the king in chief, to William, Godfrey, William, Walter, William and Robert.
