Description

Folios: 412-412v. Earldom of Richmond. Exemplification of the principal charter of John, earl of Richmond, dated at Eastry on 20 Sept 16 Edw. III.

First party: Edward III.

Second Party: John de Gandavo [Gaunt], the king's son.

Place or Subject: To raise and make provision for his son, Edward III appointed John as earl of Richemund [Richmond] and granted to him the earldom and honor, castles, manors, lands, tenements and all other places pertaining to it.

Additional people: Witnesses to creation of John as earl: J., archbishop of Canterbury [John Stratford]; R., bishop of Chichester [Robert Stratford]; Thomas, bishop of Lincoln [Thomas Bek]; Henry de Lancaster, earl of Derby; Thomas de Bello Campo [Beauchamp], earl of Warwick; Hugh de Audele [Audley], earl of Gloucester; Robert Parnyng, the king's chancellor; William de Cusancia [Cusance], the king's treasurer; Ralph de Stafford, steward of the king's household. Witnesses to the exemplification: Edward, duke of Cornwall and earl of Chester, the king's son, keeper of England [Edward of Woodstock].
