Description

Folio: 386. County of Yorkshire. Third charter of the prior of Malton.

First party: King Henry.

Place or Subject: The whole controversy which was pending between the monks of Rievall [Rievaulx] and the monks of Malton over the pasture of Edmamersh before the king, by his prayer and consent, was ended by friendly agreement in this manner. Namely, that the monks granted to the canons that they should have 30 oxen in their pasture in the waste below Pikeryng [Pickering] forever, by which they should cultivate their land of Malton, and two bulls and 30 cows, the calves of which, when they were one year old, will be moved from that pasture. Which pasture is within the boundaries granted for those animals, in length from the bridge of Houm as far as Kyptoftleye, and into the lake from Costa [Costa Beck] as far as the stream, which runs next to the houses of the monks on the west side, and heads towards Pikeryng [Pickering].

Additional people: (witnesses) William son of Aldel, steward; John, dean of Salisbury; and Master William de Ous.

Dated at Stanford.

Undated.
