Folios: 383-384v. County of Yorkshire. Charter of the prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England about their own liberties.
First party: Edward III.
Second Party: The brothers of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem.
Place or Subject: Inspeximus of King Edward III of a charter of confirmation (dated at York on 30 June 1 Edw. III), which he made under the seal that he then used, to God and St Mary and St John the Baptist and the brothers of the hospital of Jerusalem. This charter was an inspeximus of a charter (dated at Certeseye [Chertsey] on 22 Sept 2 Edw. II) made by Edward II, his father, to them. Which charter was also an inspeximus of a charter made by Edward I (dated at Westminster on 7 June 8 Edw. I). This charter, in turn, was also an inspeximus of a charter which Henry III, his father, made to them, dated at Wynton [Winchester] on 20 June 37 Hen. III. Henry III granted to God, St Mary, St John the Baptist and the brothers of the hospital of Jerusalem all reasonable gifts of lands, men and alms, granted to them by his predecessors or by others in the past or by the king in the present, or to be granted in the future by kings or from the liberty of others, or in another way acquired or to be acquired, both in churches and also in property and possessions. Also an inspeximus by Edward I of a charter, dated at Wynton [Winchester] on 23 June 37 Hen. III, which Henry III, his father, made to the brothers of the hospital. Henry III orders his officials that they protect and maintain the men, lands, property, rents, possessions and tenements of the brothers, just as the king's own property, causing no trouble or harm to them or permitting any to be done by anyone, because they and their men, property and possessions are in the king's custody and protection. And the king prohibits anyone be placed in a plea except before the king or before his chief justice. And if anyone does wrong in any way, they are to cause that to be amended without delay.
