Description

Folios: 373v-374v. County of Yorkshire. Charter of Edward III, made to the prior of the Hospital concerning lands of the Templars, being an inspeximus of a charter of confirmation to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

First party: Edward III.

Second Party: The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

Place or Subject: The king has inspected a charter of confirmation, which he made to God, St Mary, St John the Baptist and the brothers of the hospital of Jerusalem, being, itself, a charter of inspeximus of a charter made by King Henry III, granting to God, St Mary and the brothers of the Knights Templar all reasonable gifts of lands, men and alms, etc. The brothers and their men are to have and hold all their possessions and alms with all liberties and free customs and quittances, etc. The charter of King Henry II is dated at Radyng [Reading] on 12 June 37 Hen. I. The charter of Edward III is dated at York on 15 Aug 1 Edw. III.

Witnesses to the overall inspeximus: W., archbishop of York; J. bishop of Ely, chancellor; H. [Henry Burghersh], bishop of Lincoln, treasurer; J. [John Stratford], bishop of Winchester; W. [William Airmyn], bishop of Norwich; Henry, earl of Lancaster; Roger de Mortimer; Thomas Wake; and John de Roos, steward of the king's houshold.

Dated at York.
