Folios: 300v-302. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of claims of liberties and quittances at Pikeryng [Pickering] before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant assigned for pleas of the forest in the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering]:
Ralph de Hastynges [Hastings]: Ralph claims in his moor of Alverstan [Allerston] to take heath and fern and to dig turves on the same moor, and transport, carry, give and sell them at his will. He also claims in the same moor in a place called Arnaldestan to construct sheepfolds and to have and hold them, and demise them to any others at his will. And also to take greenwood in his woods of Allerston, namely in Croftclyf and Stayndale [Staindale], by the assize of the forest for housebote and haybote and dry wood to make his profit therefrom without the view or livery at his will. And also in Farmanby a certain wood called Langowedale, namely from Howe of Langowdale towards the east, the whole of that part, namely to take, sell and give greenwood and completely do his will by the assize of the forest for housebote and haybote and dry wood. And also on his moor of Farmanby to take heath and fern to dig turves and transport, carry, sell them and completely do his will thereupon. And also to have common with goats in all the said woods and moors both of Allerston and of Farmanby at all times of the year without occasion or challenge of the bailiffs or foresters. And also to hunt foxes and hares within les Acredikes of Allerston and Farmanby. And also to present one woodward on his moors and woods of Farmanby. And he says that he is tenant of the manor of Allerston, of which the said moor is parcel, and he and all his ancestors, tenants of the same manor, from time out of mind, used to take heath and fern, dig turves in his said moor of Allerston and transport, carry, sell and give them at his wish. And he says similarly that he and all his ancestors, tenants of the same manor, from time out of mind, used to construct sheepfolds on the same moor in the place called Ardolvestan, and to have and hold them, and to demise them to any others at his will. And he says similarly, as regards having greenwood, housebote and haybote in his woods of Allerston and dry wood to make his profit without livery or view in the said places, he is lord of Farmanby, of which the said wood is parcel. And he and all his ancestors, tenants of the same manor, from time out of mind, used to take greenwood in the said woods of Allerston, namely in Croftclif and Staindale, by the assize of the forest for housebote and haybote and dry wood, to make his profit therefrom without view or delivery at his wish. As regards taking heath and fern and digging turves and doing his will therewith completely, he says similarly that he is lord of Farmanby and he and all his ancestors and others, whose estate he has, from time out of mind, have taken heath and fern and dug turves in the same moor and transported, carried, sold and given them and did their will thereupon. As regards having common with goats in all the said woods and moors both of Allerston and Farmanby at all times of the year without occasion, etc, and similarly hunting hares within les Acredykes of Allerston and Farmanby, and having one woodward in his moors and woods of Allerston and another woodward in his moors and woods of Farmanby, he says that he and all his ancestors, from time out of mind, always had common with goats in all the said moors and woods, and similarly hunted foxes and hares within les Acredikes and had woodwards on the moors and woods of Allerston and Farmanby. And this he is prepared to verify by the ministers of the same forest, etc. Therefore the truth is to be inquired into.
Alan, son of Alan de Cloghton [Cloughton]: Alan claims to be quit of pannage of his pigs in Foulwode [Fullwood] and Haiburn [Hayburn] within the limits of the forest at all times of the year, and he says that he and all his ancestors, from time out of mind, by reason of his lands which he holds in Cloghton [Cloughton] and Brinyston [Burniston], which are of frank fee, were quit of pannage as pertaining to his said land, and this he is ready to verify, etc. Therefore the truth is to be inquired into, etc.
