Description

Folios: 255-255v. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Regard of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering]:

The wood called Arbrandwyth: As for the demesnes of Earl Henry, they say that in the wood called Arbrandwyth, formerly in the custody of Roger Bygot [Bigod], there are ten ?cropps in the wood called Aleyntoftes and Holla, and from the time of Richard de Scelton [Skelton], then bailiff, there are 180; in the time of John de Dalton, then bailiff, there are 107; in the time of John de Kilvyngton, then bailiff, 22; in the time of Adam de Scelton [Skelton], then bailiff, 15; in the time of Simon Symeon, then bailiff, 5, and in the time of Ralph de Hastynges [Hastings], then bailiff, 80.

The hay of Scalleby [Scalby]: In the hay of Scalleby [Scalby] there are 2,141 ?cropps and in Langedon towards the east there are 62, of which 55 are sold to the farmers there for assarting their closes.

Part of the wood of Arbrandwyth: As for the deterioration of wood and branching, they say that part of the wood of Arbrandwyth towards the north, Aleyntoftes [and] Holla have deteriorated anew as regards wood and branching, etc, to the damage of 40d.

John de Melsa [Meaux], knight: John came here in court and seeks that he might rent to himself and his heirs the whole pasture in the woods called Rumboldlyngeweit and Yortfal within the forest with appurtenances, which same woods were formerly of Roger Bygot [Bigod], lord of Levesham [Levisham]. And because at another time in the eyre of the justices of this forest, they were found by the then minsters to be wasted and deteriorated, and on account that at that time they were not redeemed, the said woods have remained up to now in the lord's hands as his demesnes, and that he might agist in the same and empark and make his profit therefrom at his will.

Richard de Playce: Richard came here in court and seeks that he might rent a certain place of land in Scalleby [Scalby] next to his messuage, containing in length 80 feet and in width 14 feet.

William son of Ivo: At another time before the last eyre of this forest, William made a certain sheepfold at Neuland [Cloughton Newlands] in the field of Cloghton [Cloughton], and because it was less near to the forest and contrary to the assize of the same, it was then considered that the said sheepfold be destroyed; now Ralph, son of the same William de Cloghton [Cloughton] still holds it as built.

Held on: Monday next after Michaelmas 8 Edw III.
