Description

Folios: 254-255. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Regard of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering]:

The wood of Halgh has newly become worse about oaks to the damage of 13s 4d for timber taken for the mending of the castle and for fuel for the countess on her stay, and by the arrival of Thomas, late earl of Lancaster, and by the vills of Neuton [Newton on Rawcliffe] and Pikeryng [Pickering], and it pertains to the same vills and is of the socage.

The wood of Stayndale has newly become worse to the damage of half a mark by lord Alan Malekake, who has died, and Thomas de Pikeryng [Pickering], and it pertains to the vill of Lokton [Lockton], and is of the socage.

The wood of Cipplynges and Haykhouth has become worse about oaks and branches to the damage of 10s for timber taken for the maintenance of the mill of Pikeryng [Pickering] and for a kiln to burn lime for wood taken during the stay of the countess at Pikeryng [Pickering], and by the arrival of the said Thomas by Robert de Hampton, parson of the church of Middelton [Middleton], who is dead, and by the vills of Pikeryng [Pickering] and Midelton [Middleton], and it pertains to the vills of Pikeryng [Pickering] and Neuton [Newton on Rawcliffe], and it is of the socage.

The wood of Kynthorp [Kingthorpe], which is called Westwode, has newly become worse as regards underwood to the damage of 3s 4d by the vill of Kynthorp [Kingthorpe], and it pertains to the same vill, and it is of the serjeanty of the lord.

The wood, which is called Sentoftheued, has newly become worse as regards underwood to the damage of 3s 4d by Robert de Hampton, parson of Middelton [Middleton], who is dead, and by the vill of Midelton [Middleton], and by Roger Tructok taking two cartloads of wood from the gift of John de Kilvington, then bailiff, and by William the weaver taking one cartload there from the gift of the said John, and by the vills of Pikeryng [Pickering], Neuton [Newton on Rawcliffe] and Midelton [Middleton], and it pertains to the vills of Pikeryng [Pickering] and Neuton [Newton on Rawcliffe], and it is of socage.

The wood of Cropton Castell has newly become worse as regards oaks to the damage of 6s 8d for timber taken for the maintenance of houses in the manor of Cropton and by the gifts of Thomas Wake and his stewards to the Franciscan friars of Scardeburgh [Scarborough] and divers other men and by the vill of Cropton, and it pertains to the same vill and is of the fee of Thomas Wake.

The wood of Wykham [Wykeham] has newly become worse to the damage of half a mark by the prioress of Wykham [Wykeham] and the vills of Wykham [Wykeham] and Roston [Ruston], and it pertains to the same vills, and is of the socage.

The wood, which is called Westris of Pikeryng [Pickering], is wasted of old and has newly become worse, and is again wasted in three places, to the damage of 20s, one of which for the fuel of countess during her stay in Pikeryng [Pickering], and two places for 'Riselect' taken for the maintenance of the ponds of the mills of Pikeryng [Pickering] by the said William de Bruys and John de Dalton, and by the vills of Midelton [Middleton] and Pikeryng [Pickering] on the west side of the river, and it pertains to the vill of Pikeryng [Pickering] and is of socage.

The wood, which is called Ryshowe and Rawra, is of old wasted and has newly become wasted in two places for fuel to the use of the countess during her stay at Pikeryng [Pickering], and for fuel to the use of the bailiffs in winter time, because they could not go elsewhere, and for closes made about the bridges of the castle, to the damage of 10s by the vill of Pikeryng [Pickering], and it pertains to the same vill, and it is of socage.

The wood of Langondale on the west side is newly wasted and has become worse in three places to the damage of 40d, by the sale of William de Leure, then bailiff, to the use of the lord for wood given to diverse men of Pikeryng [Pickering] in allowance for dry wood taken from them, as in the stay of the king during his stay at Pikeryng [Pickering], and by the vill of Pikeryng [Pickering], and the dean of York, who is dead, and by the men of the dean staying in Pikeryng [Pickering], and by the vills of Thornton [Thornton le Dale] and Rouceby [Roxby] on the west side, and Farmanby, and it pertains to the vill of Pikeryng [Pickering], and is of socage. Therefore the said men of the dean, staying in Pikeryng [Pickering], and similarly the wills of Pikeryng [Pickering], Thornton [Thornton le Dale] and Farmanby will answer for the said damages. And the wood is to be taken into the hands of the lord, etc, and the said men and vills are in mercy, etc.
