Description

Folios: 252-253. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Regard of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering]:

The wood of Baklous is of old wasted outside the ditch and is afterwards redeemed, and it is newly wasted and has become worse to the damage of 6s 8d by the vill of Sneynton [Snainton] and Westhorp in Brumpton [Brompton], and it pertains to the same vill, and is of the fee of Roger Bygot [Bigod] and Henry de Percy, and is of socage. Therefore the said vills are to answer for the said damages and the wood is to be taken into the lord's hands, etc, and, nonetheless, the said vills are in mercy, etc.

The wood of Dernecombe and Depedale [Deepdale] on the south side are wasted of old and afterwards redeemed, and have newly become worse as regards oaks and underwood to the damage of 6s 8d, by the vills of Sneynton [Snainton] and Westhorp in Brumpton [Brompton], and it pertains to the vills of Snainton and Westhorp in Brompton, and is of the soage and fee of Henry de Percy and Roger Bygot [Bigod]. Therefore the said vills are to answer for the said damages and it is to be taken into the hands of the lord, etc. And nonetheless the said vills are in mercy, etc.

The wood of Bikle is of old wasted and afterwards redeemed, and has newly become worse to the damage of 10s by the prioress of Yedyngham [Yedingham], the prior of Malton at Ebreston [Ebberston] Cotes, and by the vill of Ebreston [Ebberston], and it pertains to the vill of Ebberston and is of socage. Therefore the prioress, prior and vill of Ebberston are to answer for the said damages, and, nonetheless, they are in mercy, etc, and the wood is to be taken into the lord's hands, etc.

The wood of Crosseclif and Stayndale is of old wasted and afterwards redeemed, and has newly become worse as regards oaks to the damage of 6s 8d, by the vill of Alverstayn [Allerston], and it pertains to the same vill, and is of socage. Therefore the said vill of Allerston will answer for the said damages, and, nonetheless, it is in mercy, etc, and it is to be taken into the lord's hands, etc.

The wood called Edimpsdale is of old wasted and afterwards redeemed, and has newly become worse as regards underwood to the damage of 5s by the vill of Aton [Ayton], and it pertains to the same vill and is of socage. Therefore the said vill will answer for the said damages, and, nonetheless, is in mercy, etc, and the wood is to be taken into the lord's hands, etc.

The wood of Bodale of old is wasted, and on the west side has newly become worse about Riselettis to the damage of 40d by the prioress of Wykham [Wykeham] and by the vills of Wykeham and Ruston, and it pertains to the same vills and is of socage. Therefore the prioress and vills will answer for the said damages and the said wood is to be taken into the hands of the lord, etc. And, nonetheless, the prioress and vill of Wykeham are in mercy, etc.

The wood of Blakclyf is of old wasted and afterwards redeemed, and has not become worse. Therefore nothing further.

Part of the wood is Blakclyf is of old wasted and has newly become worse in oaks to the damage of 6s 8d by the prioress of Wykham [Wykeham] and by the vills of Wykeham and Ruston, and it pertains to the same vills and is of socage. Therefore the prioress and vills of Wykeham and Ruston will answer for the said damages, and the wood is to be taken into the hands of the lord, etc, and, nonetheless, the prioress and vills of Wykeham and Ruston are in mercy, etc.

The wood of Holcombe is of old wasted and not redeemed, and remained in the hands of the lord as demesne wood, and it is leased and is worth 20s a year. And the lord received it and it is of the serjeanty of the lord and of the fee of the Earl Marshal, and it pertains to the vill of Lokton [Lockton].

The wood of Hyndeslakside is of old wasted and has newly become worse to the damage of 40d, and was afterwards redeemed by the vill of Thornton [Thornton le Dale] on the east side of the river, and it pertains to the same vill and is of socage and of the fee of John de Eston, Roger Moubray and Peter Bruys. Therefore the vill of Thornton le Dale will answer for the said damages, and, nonetheless, the said vill is in mercy, etc, and the wood is to be taken, etc.

The wood of Ekkedale and Flaxdale on the south side and Willerdale on the north side is of old wasted and redeemed, and has newly become worse to the damage of 40s, by William Latymer [Latimer], who now is, and by William Latymer, who is dead, and William de Burgh, parson of the church of Thornton [Thornton le Dale], who is dead, and by the vills of Thornton le Dale and Wilton and Richard Russell, and is of socage and of the fee of John de Eston, Peter Bruys and John Moubray, and it pertains to the vill of Thornton le Dale. Therefore William Latymer, Richard Russell and the vills of Thornton le Dale and Wilton will answer for the said damages, and, nonetheless, William, Richard and the said vills are in mercy, etc.

Held on: Monday next after Michaelmas 8 Edw III.
