Folios: 251-252. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Regard of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering]:
William de la Launde: William made a certain purpresture in the pasture of Pikeryng [Pickering] and Neuton [Newton] in a certain place called Byrkhouthmore, and it is of socage and contains in itself four acres, one rood and a half of land, which the prior of Malton now holds, and nothing from the growing of crops because it is rented to the lord at 2s a year, just as it is found.
Hugh de Wayville: Hugh made a certain purpresture of old on the moor of Habbeton [Habton] in the fee of Ralph de Neville, and it contains in itself half an acre of land, and it pertains to the vill of Habton, is not growing crops and is in the common of the said vill, nor is it rented on account that it was destroyed by judgement two eyres ago.
Richard de Lacy, staying in Folkton outside the forest: Richard made a certain purpresture within the metes of the forest in the marshes of Cayton, Kilwardby [Killerby], Lebreston [Lebberston] and Osgodby in the fee of Henry de Percy, John de Eston and the abbot of Whiteby [Whitby], and it contains in itself by estimation 280 acres, and it pertains to the said vills, and it does not grow crops but is rented at 5s a year. And Edmund de Lacy and the vill of Folkton hold the said purpresture and it is not enclosed contrary to the assize.
William Roundell, abbot of St Mary, York: William made a certain close in the marshes of Normanby, and it is of the fee of the same abbot, contains in itself 80 acres of meadow and does not grow crops, but it is mown 44 times, the price of a crop of each acre 12d a year. Sum total £176.
John Gotheland: John made anew a certain purpresture in Aleyntoftes in the lord's demesne in a place called Somerholm, and it contains in itself by estimation 2½ acres, which Thomas le Rode now holds, and it is the demesne of Henry, earl of Lancaster and it is rented, and he pays to the lord 12d a year.
Alan Sedman: Alan has made a certain purpresture by the enclosing of a certain hay in a place called Staynthwayt of the fee of Roger Bygot [Bigod], and it contains in itself two acres, which John Mews now holds, and it pertains to the vill of Levesham [Levisham].
The prioress of Roscedale [Rosedale]: The prioress made a certain purpresture in Roscedale [Rosedale] outside the demesne in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself two acres by diverse parcels [of land], and it pertains to the vill of Syvelyngton [Sinnington] and is not growing crops, but is mowed five times, the price of the crop of an acre 10d a year. Sum 8s 4d. For which the prioress will answer, and in a certain parcel of land there a certain house has been built contrary to the assize of the forest.
Richard de Breaus: Richard has enclosed his wood in a place called Lunde in his demesne, and it contains in itself 6 acres of land, contrary to the assize of the forest, which William Latymer [Latimer] now holds, and it pertains to the vill of Syvelyngton [Sinnington], and it does not grow crops or is rented.
Thomas de Ebreston [Ebberston]: Thomas has built one house and caused there to be enclosed 40 acres of land by a certain ditch in the lawn of Wykle, and it was growing crops of oats, and it now lies as waste and is of socage, and it pertains to the vill of Ebreston [Ebberston], and is rented to the lord at 2s a year. And Thomas Thurnyf and Robert Eyermin, now tenants of the same, now hold them, not enclosed, contrary to the assize of the forest.
Robert de Conysclif, bailiff of Pikeryng [Pickering]: Robert caused there to be assarted and made into purpresture of old 190 acres and one rood of land within the lordship of Gotheland [Goathland] and Aleyntoftes, and he caused them to be rented to the use of the lord. And other subsequent bailiffs have, until now, caused to be assarted and made into purpresture 308 acres there, and caused them to be rented to the use of the lord, which diverse tenants now hold there.
Thomas the forester: Thomas came here in court and rented to the lord three acres of land by Tranemyre [Tranmire] at 4½d a year, namely each acre at 1½d.
The wood called Brymbelclyf: Concerning wastes of woods the same regarders say that the wood called Brymbelclyf is wasted of old, and has recently become worse as regards underwood, to the damage of 40d, by the vill of Syvelyngton [Sinnington] and William Latymer [Latimer], now tenant of the same, and it pertains to the vill of Syvelyngton [Sinnington] and is of the fee of Roger Bygot [Bigod]. Therefore the said vill and William Latymer are to answer for the said damages, and the wood is to be taken into the hands, etc, and, nonetheless, the said vill and William are in mercy, etc.
The wood of Foulwode [Fulwood] and the wood of Brynyston [Burniston] were wasted of old and afterwards redeemed, and now are newly wasted and have become worse to the damage of 15s, by Richard de Scelton [Skelton], then bailiff, Alexander de Bergh, the prior of Brydlyngton [Bridlington] and by the vills of Cloghton [Cloughton], Burniston, Scalleby [Scalby] and Neuby [Newby], and they are of the socage and fee of the abbot of Whiteby [Whitby] and pertain to the said vills. Therefore Richard, Alexander, the prior of Bridlington and the said vills are to answer for the said damages, and the said wood is to be taken into the hands of the lord, etc, and, nonetheless, Richard, Alexander, the prior and the said vills are in mercy, etc.
