Folios: 249v-250. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Regard of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering]:
Robert Storour: Twenty-two years ago, Robert made a certain close outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and contains in itself one acre and one rood of land, and does not grow crops, but half an acre thereof is mown 8 times, the price of a crop 5d a year, and half an acre and one rood and, similarly, that half [acre] at the time when they are not mown an acre is worth 3d a year. Sum total 11s 10d. For which Richard son of John, who is now the tenant, will answer, and the land is to be taken in the hands, etc, and Richard is in mercy.
William Hare: Twenty-two years ago, William made a certain close at Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself one acre and a half of land, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and does not grow crops, and is mown three times, the price of a crop of an acre 10d a year, and at the time when it is not mown half an acre is worth 4d a year. Sum 13s 9d. For which Hugh son of Stephen, now the tenant, will answer, and the land is to be taken into the lord's hands, and Hugh is in mercy, etc.
Cecily, formerly the wife of Robert the smith: Twenty-two years ago, Cecily made a certain close at Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself 3½ acres, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and does not grow crops, but one acre is mown 8 times, the price of a crop of an acre 10d a year, and at the time when the same is not mown it is worth 4d a year. Sum total 11s 4d, and nothing from the rest of the said close because it lies as waste and is not enclosed, contrary to the assize, for which sum Elias Cokerel, now the tenant of the same, will answer, and the land is to be taken, etc, and Elias is in mercy, etc.
Elias Cokerel: Twenty-two years ago, Elias made a certain close at Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself one rood of land, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and grows crops of oats seven times, worth 6d a year, and at the time when it does not grow crops it is worth 1d a year. Sum total 6s 9d. For which the same Elias and Thomas Wake will answer and the land is to be taken into the hands, etc, and Thomas is in mercy, etc.
Elias Cokerel: Sixteen years ago, Elias made a certain close at Wrygholm outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself three roods of land, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and it grows crops of oats 10 times, worth 12d a year, and at the time when it does not grow crops it is worth 3d a year. Sum total 11s 6d. For which Elias, now tenant of the same, will answer, and the land is to be taken into the lord's hands, and Elias is in mercy, etc.
Henry Youhirde: Twelve years ago, Henry made a certain close in Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself three acres, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and does not grow crops, but half an acre is mown 7 times, the price of a crop 6d a year, and the other 2½ acres and similarly for that half-acre at the time when they are not mown each acre is worth 4d a year. Sum total 13s. For which Henry, now tenant of the same, will answer, and the land is to be taken in the hands, etc, and Henry is in mercy, etc.
Peter Smalhesel: Three years ago, Peter made a certain close in Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself two acres and one rood, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and it does not grow crops, but one acre thereof is mown twice, the price of a crop of an acre 10d a year, and the other acre and rood and, similarly, for that acre at the time when they are mown each acre is worth 4d a year. Sum total 3s 3d. For which Peter, now the tenant of the same, will answer and the land is to be taken into the hands, etc. And Peter is in mercy, etc.
Hugh Sutor: Ten years ago, Hugh made a certain close in Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself one rood, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, and it does not grow crops, nor is it enclosed contrary to the assize, and it is not mown but is worth 1d a year. Sum 10d. For which Hugh will answer and the land is to be taken in the hands, etc, and Hugh, nonetheless, is in mercy, etc.
Thomas Abraham: Seven years ago, Thomas made a certain close in Haretoft [Hartoft] outside the lordship in the fee of Thomas Wake, and it contains in itself three acres, and it pertains to the vill of Cropton, of which three roods grow summer crops once, the price of a crop 10d a year, and at the time when the same three roods are not mown they are worth 2¼d a year. Sum total 22d, and nothing from the rest of the said close, because it lies as waste and is not enclosed contrary to the assize, of which said sum Thomas Abraham, now tenant of the same, will answer, and the land is to be taken in the hands, etc, and Thomas is in mercy, etc.
Thomas, late earl of Lancaster: In the time of the present earl, his brother, whose heir he is, the said Earl Thomas caused there to be enclosed with a ditch one close in Fouelwode, which contains in itself 80 acres of land, and afterwards he gave that close to Elias de Stapelton [Stapleton], to hold for the term of his life by his charter, paying 6s 8d. for this. William Gower now holds the said close, and it pertains to the vills of Cloghton [Cloughton], Bryniston [Burniston], Scalleby [Scalby] and Neuby [Newby] and is of the fee of Henry Percy. The close is to be taken into the lord's hands, and in the meantime it is to be inquired about the growing of crops or mowing, etc.
Roger de Manneshere: Roger made anew a certain assart in the wood of Kynthorp [Kingthorpe] in a place called Westslak, by licence of the lord, outside the lordship from the serjeanty of the lord, and it pertains to the vill of Kynthorp [Kingthorpe] and contains in itself 9 acres of land and grows summer crops once, the price of an acre 12d. Sum 20s. For which Petronilla de Kynthorp [Kingthorpe], now tenant of the same, will answer, and nothing is due from the time when it does not grow crops, because it lies waste.
