Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Concerning trespasses of greenwood:
Adam de Skelton, late keeper of the the said castle and forest: There were felled at Pikeryng six oaks for fuel during the stay of the now earl there. And in the burning of coal at Worthfal 8 oaks and 24 oak branches. And Adam took one oak in Whatres and 15 oaks, 110 branches in Halgh, and carried them to Belynause to a grange for his own use. And similarly 8 oaks to make a fence in Therdale, and he sold in the valley of Dalby 107 dry dead trees and thereof he delivered to Roger le Long one oak in Halgh; and one oak to John the smith in Whates; and one oak in Kelgate to Geoffrey Benne; and one oak in Waytherfoye to Hugh le Taillour; and to Robert le Bruys, dean of York, 8 oaks in Whates and Halugh; and to the same dean 14 branches in Birkhowe; and to John son of Isabella, three oaks in Halugh; and to the vicar of Pickering one oak in Halugh and one oak in Haythouth; and to Geoffrey Benne two oaks there; and to Christina, formerly the wife of Thomas le Taillour two oaks in the demesnes of Rise; and to Robert Bellard one oak in Birkhouth; and to William le Latimer two oaks in the demesnes of Dalby; and to Bartholomew de Fanacourt one oak there; and to John le Slatter one oak in Langedale; and to John de Malton two oaks; and to Ralph le Bedele one oak. And he sold in the hay of Scalby 260 dry dead trees, and in Aleyntoftes there were felled 12 oaks, and in Lynwhates four oaks to the use of the castle. They do not know by what warrant.
[Adam de Skelton]: There were taken at Adam's time 60 stags and 180 red deer and calves, and six stags and 18 red deer to the abbot of St Mary of York for his tithe. And 200 stags and 300 red deer and calves suffered from murrain.
Simon Simion, late constable of the castle and keeper of the said forest: There were felled in the said forest two oaks, one of which was delivered to Adam atte More and the other to John the smith. And that at the same there were taken two stags, four red deer and four fallow deer by pretext of a warrant of the earl, as they understand. And in murrain there, as it is asserted, there are six stags and 14 red deer.
Ralph de Hastynges [Hastings], now constable of the said castle and keeper of the said forest: There were felled for fuel to the use of the present earl on two occasions in Gundale and Yates 11 oaks. And they were delivered to William de Colby, dean of York, in Halugh four oaks, and to William Bruys two oaks, and to John the smith one oak, and to Geoffrey Benne one oak, and to Alexander de Harpham one oak, and to John Boys one oak, and to Robert the chamberlain two oaks. And he sold in Aleyntoftes 60 oaks, each worth 12d. And he delivered to Roger Long two oaks and to Hugh de Yealand one oak in Kildale; and to the Lady Vescy staying at Scarborough 31 dead trees; and to the Dominican friars 16 oaks; and to the Carmelite friars 10 oaks; and to Henry de Percy three oaks; and to William Brache four oaks; and to Thomas Baker of Seamer one oak; and to Simon de Ayton one oak in the hay of Scalby; and for the sustenance of the earl's millers four oaks, as it was said. And during his time were taken 12 stags, four male fallow deer,and 80 red deer, calves and female fallow deer outside the park. And he delivered six stags and three red deer to the abbot of St Mary of York in the name of his tithe by warrants which he had.
