Folios: 215-217. County of Yorkshire. Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: People mentioned.
William de Seteryngton [Settrington]: It is presented that William is accustomed to place sharp traps (cathias) in the assarts of the hays to catch wild beasts. He does not now come, nor was he attached, etc. Item, Peter de Kirkeby, Thomas, son of Richard of the same, Geoffrey Baldelok of the same, William Dundale of the same, Ralph the carpenter of the same, and Edmund Batholf of the same. They did not have him on the first day of the eyre, just as they mainprised him. And it is witnessed that they are staying in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make them come.
Robert Sprynk: On Friday next before Pentecost, Robert came in the said forest in a certain place called Fulepotte, and he killed there one deer, and he thereupon did his will. He does not now come, but it is testified that he is staying in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make his come, etc.
John Tendbarn, Walter le Smyth, William, son of William son of Moye, and Preter Johan: On Thursday next before the feast of St Andrew the Apostle in the said year, they came in the said forest in the place called Wirlawewath, and took there one deer with dogs, and they thereupon did their will. They do not now come, etc, but it is witnessed that they are staying in the country.
Thomas Wryel, William, son of William Moye and Prester Johan: On the eve of Holy Trinity in the same year, in the said forest in the place called Stayrigh, they came with dogs of the abbot of Whiteby [Whitby], with the abbot knowing, and let the dogs run, and they took one deer and carried away the game with them, and they thereupon did their will. They do not now come, but it is witnessed that they stay in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make then come.
Geoffrey de Langedon: On Friday next before the feast of the Circumcision 4 Edw III, Geoffrey came in this forest in a certain place called Depedale [Deepdale], and killed there one deer and carried away the game with him, and he thereupon did his will. He does not now come, nor was he previously attached, but it is witnessed that he is staying in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to cause him to come.
John de Brigham: On Thursday the eve of the Translation of St Thomas the Martyr 3 Edw III, John came in the said forest in a certain place called Sandbekmos with a certain company, and there took one deer and carried away his game with him and thereupon did his will. He does not now come, nor was he previously attached, but it is witnessed that he is staying in the country, etc.
John Cokerell of Cropton: On Friday next before Christmas 3 Edw III, John came in the said forest in a place called [blank], and he found one male deer dead, which William de Shipton, forester of the abbot of St Mary of Spaunton, hunted, and followed it to the river of Syven [Seven], which John found dead in the said forest next to his house and placed it upon his sled and carried it to his own house and thereupon did his will. He has not now come, nor was he previously attached, but it is witnessed that he is staying in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make him come.
William de la Chapel and William de Egton: On Friday next before the feast of All Saints 2 Edw III, they came in the forest of Pikeryng [Pickering] in a certain place called Taksyk, and there took one deer and thereupon did their will. They do not now come, but it is witnessed that they are staying in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to cause them to come.
William de Askeby and William, son of Robert Todde: On Saturday next before Michaelmas 16 Edw II, they came in the said forest in a certain place called Crossedale towards the north, and there William de Askeby killed one deer and carried the game to the house of Richard Campion of Farmanby, and Alan, son of the same Robert, and Juliana, wife of the same Robert, received the said game, with Robert knowing and consenting, to the use of Brother Austin Stalwordman, then granger of Kekmarreys [Kekmarish], who received and had part of the game. They do not now come, nor were they previously attached, but it is witnessed that they are staying in the country.
Roger Drye, Richard Drye, John Sumpter, abbot of Whiteby [Whitby], Henry le Parker, Peter de Acclom [Acklam], Peter, his groom, William de Elredby, John Paulyn, groom of the said Peter, and Walter le Hunter: On Friday next before the feast of St Thomas the Apostle in the said year, they came with bows and arrows and five greyhounds, three of which were of the abbot of Whiteby [Whitby], in the said forest in a certain place called Yarnolfbek, and they took there one four-year-old stag (sourum), and they carried it away with them and did their will thereupon. They do not now come, nor were they previously attached, but it is witnessed that they are staying in the country. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to cause them to come.
Peter de Acclom [Acklam], Peter his groom, William de Elleredby, John Paulyn, the groom of the said Peter de Acclom, William Page of Aton, William de Roston, Walter le Hunter, John de Seton [Seaton], Ambrose de la Chaumbre and Robert Capoun: On Friday in the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the said year, they came with five greyhounds, bows and arrows on the moor of Hoton [Hutton Buscel], and took there one four-year-old stag (sourum), and they carried away the game with them, and they thereupon did their will. They do not now come, etc.
Robert Capoun, knight, and Robert, son of Marmaduke de Tweng [Thwing]: It is presented that they and eight unknown men, on Friday the morrow of Martinmas in the said year, came with four greyhounds, bows and arrows in the said forest in a certain place called Ellerbek [Eller Beck], and took there one stag and two other wild beasts, and they carried away with them the game, and thereupon did their will. And that Robert Capoun and the other unknown men, on Thursday before the Invention of the Holy Cross in the said year, came in the said forest in a certain place called Ellerbek [Eller Beck], with greyhounds, bows and arrows contrary to the assize of the forest for the sake of doing wrong. They do not now come, etc. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to make them come.
