Pleas of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering], held at Pickering before Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, justices itinerant on this occasion assigned to take pleas of the said forest in Yorkshire: Writs and returns.
Writ dated 17 Aug 8 Edw III, the king to The archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, earls, barons, knights, foresters, verderers, agisters and regarders and all others of the county of Yorkshire: At the request of Henry, earl of Lancaster, the king's kinsman, the king has appointed Richard de Wylughby [Willoughby], John de Shardelowe, Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, three and two of them, as justices itinerant on this occasion to take pleas of the forest of the same earl, of Pikeryng [Pickering] from the time when Edmund, late earl of Lancaster, father of the said Henry, whose heir he is, last held pleas of the forest in the same forest, by virtue of a grant made to him by Edward I.
Writ dated 17 Aug 8 Edw III: On the said Monday before the said Richard, Robert and John de Hambury, there came Peter de Saltmersh [Saltmarshe], sheriff of Yorkshire, and he produced a writ of the king concerning the said eyre, as follows: The king orders the sheriff of Yorkshire to summon, by good summons, archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, earls, barons, knights and all freeholders, who have lands or tenements within the metes of the forest of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of Pikeryng [Pickering] in the said county, and four men from every vill of the said county, being within the metes of the same forest, and the reeve and foresters of the vills and all others who are accustomed and ought to come before the justices at pleas of the forest, so that they are at Pickering on Monday next after Michaelmas next to come before Richard Wylughby [Willoughby], John de Shardelowe, Robert de Hungerford and John de Hambury, three or two of them, whom the king has appointed at the earl's request as justices itinerant on this occasion to take pleas of the forest of the earl in the said county from the time when Edmund, late earl of Lancaster, father of the said Henry, whose heir he is, last held pleas of the forest in the same forest by virtue of a grant made to him by Edward I, all who are about to hear and do his order concerning those things which pertain to the said pleas. The sheriff is also to cause to come before the same justices all foresters, verderers and all those who were foresters and verderers of the said forest in the said county after the last pleas with all their attachments, both concerning the greenwood and hunting, which have emerged after the last pleas of the forest and are not yet finished, namely both concerning those attachments which remain within the metes of the aforesaid and also those which remain outside the forest.
Return of writ: Peter de Saltmersh [Saltmarshe], sheriff of Yorkshire: The sheriff returned that he made a full return of that writ to Hugh de Neville, bailiff of the liberty of Henry, earl of Lancaster, of the honor of Pikeryng [Pickering], to whom the execution of that writ remains to be made, who answers him that he caused to be summoned the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, earls, barons, knights and all freeholders who have lands and tenements within the metes of the forest, and four men from each vill of the same county, being within the metes of the said forest, and the reeve and foresters of the said vill and all others, who are accustomed and ought to come before the justices at pleas, that they should be at Pickering at the day contained in the writ, before the said justices, three or two of them, to be ready to hear and do the king's command about those things, which pertain to the said pleas.
