Description

Folios: 192-192v. County of Yorkshire. Inquisition.

First party: Henry, son of Henry earl of Lancaster.

Second party: Ralph de Hastyng [Hastings], his steward of Pikering [Pickering].

Place or subject: Henry the son sent his letters to the said Ralph [recited in French], dated at York on 2 February. By virtue of which, this inquisition was taken before the steward at Thornton [Thornton le Dale] on Thursday next after Martinmas 8 Edw III. The jurors say that one messuage and one bovate of land in Midelton [Middleton], to be granted by William de Bruys, are held in alms of the rector of the church of Middleton by the service of 3s a year, and the rector holds that rent in pure alms, and they are of the fee of Thomas Wake and in no way are held of the said lord Henry. Therefore it is to no damage to Henry. They also say that one toft and one bovate of land in Middleton, to be granted by William Bruys in alms, are of the socage and lordship of Pikering [Pickering] and are held of John de Clifton by the service of 18d a year for all service. And John holds them of Thomas Wake, paying him the said 18d a year, and Thomas holds them of the said lord Henry, paying him 18d per annum for all service. And it is not to the damage of the said Henry, on account that Thomas Wake pays him the said 18d a year. And he does to him all the services which pertain to the said tenements, and they are not held of Henry in chief. They also say that two messuages and two bovates of land in Middleton, to be granted by William Bruys in alms, are held of the abbot of St Mary of York by the service of 9d a year for all service, and the abbot holds them in pure and perpetual alms and in no way is it held of the said Henry. Therefore it is to no damage to Henry. They also say that one messuage in Pikering [Pickering], to be granted by William Bruys in alms, is of bondage, and is held of Alesia, daughter of Thomas le Taillour, and it is not to the damage of the said Henry, because Alesia can sell that, and it is sufficient to do, and she does to the same Henry all the customs and services due from the said messuage. They also say that 3s of rent in Pickering, to be granted by William Bruys in alms, are received from Lawrence de Neuton [Newton] and issue freely from one toft there, which is held in bondage from the heirs of John son of Adam, and it is not to the damage of the said Henry, because the said heir of John son of Adam holds that toft of Henry, and he does to him all the services thereupon due. They also say that 4s 6d of rent in Kynthorp [Kingthorpe], to be granted by William Bruys in alms, are received from Roger son of William and issue from one messuage and one bovate of land there freely, and are held of Petronilla de Kynthorp, by the service of 6d a year for all service, and Petronilla holds that rent of Henry and does all services to him lawfully due thereupon. They also say that 3s of rent in Pickering, to be granted by William Bruys in alms, from John Todde and issue from a certain parcel of the said messuage which is held of the said Alesia in Pickering, and they are held of Alesia by the said service, and Alesia of the said Henry. They also say that 2s of rent in Pickering, to be granted by the said William Bruys in alms, are received from Thomas de Caldham and issue freely from one toft in Pickering and are held of Thomas, and Thomas holds that rent of the said Henry, and he does all services thereupon due to him.

County: Yorkshire.
