Description

Folio: 191v. County of Yorkshire. Writ.

First party: Edward II.

Second party: Gerard Salvayn, the king's escheator beyond the Trent.

Place or subject: Although at the king's mandate Gerard Salvayn certified to the king that he has taken the manor of John de Heselarton [Heslarton] of Wilton into the king's hands, on account that Roger Bigod, formerly earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, held that manor as a member of the manor of Setrington [Settrington] of Edward I, and he gave that to John Lovell, and the same John gave the manor of Wilton to John de Heslarton and Margery, his wife, and their heirs male, without having obtained licence of Edward I. Because by inspection of the book called Domesday, it is found that the soke of the manor of Wilton pertains to the manor of Pikeringh [Pickering], which is now in the hands of Thomas, earl of Lancaster, the king's kinsman, by inheritance, by which the manor of Wilton is not held of the king but is held of the manor of Pikering [Pickering]. The king commands Gerard not to busy himself with the manor of Wilton any further, saving always the king's right in all things, delivering the issues taken by him from the time of the taking of the same inquisition into the king's hands to John de Heslarton.
