Place or subject: The abbot and convent are held to John in £3,000 of sterling of good money, payable to him and his heirs if the abbot and convent or their successors or any of their men from now on will dig turves in Mersklanda of Inkellesmor beyond forty perches of length, extending from the bank of the Air [Aire] and from the Huse [Ouse] and from the Don towards the moor of Inkellesmor. and they will not and cannot make any claim of land or moor beyond the said 40 perches towards the moor, forever, without the licence and special feoffment of John and his heirs.
