Place or subject: a fine was levied in the court of Edward I before John de Metyngham and his fellow justices at York in the octave of Trinity 29 Edw I between Adam de Walton of Hole [Hoole], querent, and Adam, son of Warin de Waleton [Walton], deforciant, concerning the manor of Waleton [Ulnes Walton], 30 acres of land in Laylande [Leyland], 30s of rent in Kelgrimesargh [Kellamergh], and a moiety of the manors of Eccleston, Heskyn [Heskin] and Leyland. And for this fine Adam, son of Warin de Walton, granted to Adam de Walton of Hole the said tenements. To be held in tail, with successive remainders after his decease to Adam de Waleton of Mitton in tail, then to William de Waleton in tail, then to Margery de Waleton in tail, and then to the said Adam, son of Warin de Waleton, and his heirs. On the part of the said William de Waleton, the king has heard that the said Adam de Walton of Hole has died without heirs in tail, and the said Adam de Walton of Mitton has also died without heirs in tail, by which the tenement ought to remain to the William de Walton according to the fine. William, son of Robert de Radeclyve, and Katherine, his wife now hold the manor of Walton [Ulnes Walton], 30 acres of land in Leyland, 30s of rent in Kelgrimesargh and a moiety of the manors of Eccleston, Heskyn and Laylonde with appurtenances, except for one messuage, 23 acres of land of moiety of the manor of Laylond, and Nicholas son of Henry, son of Robert Attetonesende, and Elizabeth, sister Nicholas, hold the messuage and 23 acres of land of the moiety of Laylond. and they have unjustly deforced William de Walton.

Second party: William, son of Robert de Radeclyf.
Place or subject: William de Walton is held to William, son of Robert de Radeclyf, in £1,000 of silver by a recognisance made before to the said William before the justices of the king at [York]. Mentions the manor of Walton.

Additional people: Robert de Wetenhale and Maud, his wife, John Blount and Agnes, his wife, which wives are the daughters of the said William de Walton.

First party: Roger [de Northburgh], bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.
Place or subject: There has been some doubt about the legitimacy of Maud, wife of Robert de Whetenale, daughter of William de Walton of Lych' [Lichfield] and Margery de Clayton. The bishop makes it known that the said William and Margery, father and mother of Maud, were married legally and that from the time of her birth throughout the whole neighbourhood Maud was regarded as the legitimate daughter of William and Margery and still is.

First party: The official of the court of Canterbury.
Second party: Roger [de Northburgh], bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.
Place or subject: The complaint has been received from Maud de Bracebrigge [Bracebridge], the natural and legitimate daughter of William de Walton, that, although the said William had raised her as his lawful offspring by Margery de Clayton, then and now his wife, after a marriage had been contracted between William and Margery before the birth of the said Maud, nevertheless, a certain Margery de Norleye has disturbed Maud in the right and possession of this lawful descent, and opposes her from being able to gain the rights of legitimacy, to Maud's harm. The party of the said Maud appeared before the ordinary judge of the said Margery but he did not take care to listen to what her party was seeking and to do due justice for her in this matter. The said Maud has come to the official of Canterbury and sought a suitable remedy.

First party: Henry de Lancaster, earl of Derby.
Second party: William de Bracebrigge [Bracebridge] and Maud, his wife.
Place or subject: William de Walton, father of the said Maud, leased to the earl two parts of the manor of Walton, 30 acres of land in Laylond, 30s of rent in Kelgrimesargh, and the moiety of the manors of Eccleston, Heskyn and Laylond, with all appurtenances, for the term of his life, paying £50 a year. The said William de Bracebrigge and Maud, his wife, after the death of the said William de Walton were to make a feoffment by release or by fine to the said earl and his heirs of the said lands with the third part, which John de Croft and Emma, his wife, hold in dower. The said earl was to pay to the William de Bracebrigg' and Maud after the death of William de Walton £40 a year. The earl grants that, if William de Bracebrigge and Maud accomplish all the convenants, then the letter of account made by them is to be null and of no force.

First party: Henry de Great Sogunhull, clerk of Coventry and Lichfield diocese.
Place or subject: William de Walton of Lych' in his household in the city of Lichfield, where he was then living, swore that he had solemnly married Margery, mother of the said Maud, Margery being then pregnant and given birth after the marriage had been contracted. Margery and also Robert de Trentham and Robert de Fulfen, then being personally present there, swore upon the gospels that the said William had told the truth.

First party: Robert de Burton upon Trent, clerk of Coventry and Lichfield diocese.
Second party: Maud Ingot of Lych', a woman in the city of Lichfield in the inn of John le Yonge, in which the said Maud was then dwelling.
Place or subject: Maud said that she had been defamed, on account that it had been charged to her that she had said to John de Croft of Lancashire and others of county that Maud, daughter of William de Walton, citizen of Lichfield, wife of William de Bracebrigg', had been born a long time before the solemnisation of marriage between her father and mother. The said Maud Ingot answers after taking an oath that she never spoke the said words to the said John de Croft or anyone else, but she truly knew and knows that the said William de Walton, father of Maud, married Margery, his wife, mother of Maud and after this solemnisation Maud was born. At which solemnisation she said on her oath that she had been present.

First party: Maud de Pype [Pipe], abbess of Pollesworth [Polesworth], and the convent of place.
Place or subject: The inheritance of Maud, daughter and heir of William de Walton. The abbess and convent bear witness that she was the right heir of her father and born within marriage.
