Description

Folios: 92v-93. County of Lancaster. Writ.

First party: The official of the court of Canterbury.

Second party: Roger [Roger de Northburgh], bishop of Coventry and Lichfield.

Place or subject: The complaint has been received from Maud de Brascebrig' [Bracebridge], the natural and legitimate daughter of William de Walton, that, although the said William had raised the said Maud as his lawful offspring by Margery de Claton, then and now his wife, after a marriage had been contracted between the same William and Margery in the face of the church before the birth of the said Maud, nevertheless, a certain Margery de Norleye has disquieted and disturbed the said Maud in the right and possession of this lawful descent many times and unduly, and also unduly opposes her and impedes the said Maud from being able to gain the rights of legitimacy, to Maud's great prejudice and harm. The party of the said Maud appeared before the ordinary judge of the said Margery and explained the premises to him in detail, humbly entreating him that he cause Margery to be summoned to make answer to her about the premises according to the exigencies of law. But he did not take care to listen to what her party was seeking and to do due justice to her in this matter, and duly delayed this and still delays unjustly. The said Maud has come to the said official of Canterbury and sought a suitable remedy to be provided.
