Description

Folios: 72-72v. County of Lancaster. Writ.

First party: Geoffrey le Scrope and his fellow justices.

Second party: The sheriff of Lancashire.

Place or subject: On behalf of the king the said justices ordered the sheriff to cause there to come before them on Monday next after the feast of Holy Trinity at Colne 24 knights and other free and law-worthy men of his bailiwick, by whom the truth of the matter could be better known, to inquire whether Henry de Lacy in the foundation of the abbey of Kirkestall [Kirkstall] had given to the then abbot of the same place and the monks there the manor of Bernolneswyk [Barnoldswick] by the boundaries contained in a certain deed of the said Henry, and caused these boundaries and metes to be made, namely by the river which is called Blakebrok, and so down beyond the moor straight to Gaylmers, and so straight to the head of Elleshagh, and so going across the hill which is called Blachou, and so to Oxegill [Oxgill], and so by Oxegil down to Pikedelawe, which is called Aleynsete, and from Pykedelawe to the old ditch between Medhop and Colerden. And whether or not the same then abbot and his successors held that manor by the said metes and boundaries and did their benefit and will in the lands pertaining to the same manor without impediment until Henry de Lacy, late earl of Lincoln, impeded Hugh de Grymeston [Grimston], abbot of the said place, from being able to have his benefit in any of the said lands within those metes, and if the same Hugh was impeded or ejected from the said lands. And if the same Hugh, formerly abbot, after the said impediment had common in the said lands until he was impeded by the ministers of Isabella, queen of England, the king's mother, and if so, by which ministers and why. And if the said abbot or his predecessors quitclaimed any right in the same lands to the said earl or any other lord there, etc. The sheriff is have there the names of the jurors.
