Description

Folios: 62-62v. County of Lancaster. Quitclaim.

First party: Bennet Gernet.

Second party: Edmund, son of Henry III, earl of Lancaster.

Place or subject: Whereas Bennet Gernet at one time held certain lands and tenements within the honor of Lancaster of Edmund, son of Henry III, earl of Lancaster, by the service of keeping the forests of the same Edmund and the wood of Burtonwode [Burtonwood] within the said county by the service of the yearly rent of £12, which same lands and tenements the grandfather of the said Bennet, whose heir he is, held of John, count of Mortonia [Mortain], by the service of one knight's fee. Which same earl afterwards exchanged that service for the service of the serjeanty of keeping the said forests with the said wood. The same Bennet had handed over into Edmund's hands the keeping of all the said forests and wood, and quitclaimed it to the said Edmund and his heirs, together with commons, liberties, customs and any other things which the same Bennet Gernet or any of his ancestors by occasion of the said custody had or could have in the said forests and wood, and also all commons which he claimed to have by reason of his said lands in the several demesne hays or pastures of the same Edmund within the said forests and wood.
