Folios: 59-59v. County of Lancaster. Grant.
First party: Henry III.
Second party: Edmund, the king's son.
Place or subject: Whereas on 16 Oct 18 Hen III the king granted by his charter to God and St Mary of Furnes [Furness] and the then abbot and convent of the same place the homage and service of Michael Flemeng [Fleming] from the whole land, which he held of the king within Furness by £10 a year, in such a way that William Fleming, son and heir of the same Michael, and his heirs should be from then on attentive and answerable to the said abbot and convent and their successors for their homages and service, which the same Michael was accustomed to do to the king, and for the rent of £10 a year which Michael used to pay to the king from the said land. The said abbot and convent and their successors were to pay to the king and his heirs the said £10 a year at Michaelmas for all service, tallage and demand. Saving to the said William and his heirs their lands, tenements and liberties due and accustomed. In such a way that their sheriffs and bailiffs of that land do not interfere in anything, as they ought not to do anything about other alms of the same abbey within Furnes [Furness], except about pleas of the crown, which, when they happen, are to be attached by the king's coroners and the bailiffs of the same abbot and to be impleaded before the king or his justices. Saving to the king the amercements issuing therefrom and the chattels of fugitives and those condemned, and the lands and tenements of the same throughout one year and one day, and other things pertaining to the crown, and the said homage and service, together with the said £10, pertaining at any time to the honor and county of Lancaster, which the king gave with all appurtenances to Edmund and his heirs by his charter, by which the said £10 ought to be paid and homage and service be done to Edmund and his heirs according to the form of the king's grant of the said honor and county made to Edmund. The king wishes and grants that the said abbot and convent and their successors pay the said £10 to Edmund and his heirs at Lancaster every single year at Michaelmas in the same manner as they used to pay them at the Exchequer for the homage and service of the said Michael.
