Administrative / biographical background

The Sentencing Council for England and Wales was created by the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 to promote greater transparency and consistency in sentencing, whilst maintaining the independence of the judiciary. The Sentencing Council inherited the responsibilities of the Sentencing Guidelines Council in April 2010, together with those of the Sentencing Advisory Panel.
