Folios 719-720: Thomas Duval, HMS Fly, Spithead.
Reports his arrival from Africa and describes the voyage. On 12 April 1801 HMS Melpomene left Cape Coast where Captain Charles Hamilton left orders for Duval but which he has not completely accomplished. Not wishing to wait 2 months at anchor by Cape Coast harbour he sailed up the coast visiting forts and making corrections as to their longitudes but the journal referred to is missing. On 28 April 1801 he fell in with HMS Snake and sent her to Princes island as she had despatches for Hamilton. Violent rains set in mid May and fever weakened the crew so that they were unable to continue sailing. On 26 March 1801 he was joined by HM Snake under William Roberts and they left the Cape Coast for Princes Island then Jamaica. He left HMS Snake at St Thomas's en route. Having only one death among the crew he describes the treatments given and recommends the safest time for the voyage to Africa.
Folios 721-722: enclosed with folios 719-720. Sir Charles Hamilton, HMS Melpomene on Cape Coast Roads, 6 April 1801 writes to Thomas Duval having received a petition from the masters of the merchant vessels asking for a convoy to escort them to West Indies from Princes Island when they are ready in about 2 months. The Governor Dalzel had forwarded the petition and approved the action. Duval is ordered to wait before sailing with the convoy to Martinique where he should put himself under the command of Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth. If needed he should accompany trade vessels to Demerara or Surinam.
Folios 723-724: enclosed with folios 719-720. Thomas Duval, HMS Fly, writes to William Roberts of HMS Snake telling him of the very serious health problems on board HMS Fly. He orders Roberts to take the convoy to the islands.
