Folios 717-718: Thomas Duval, HMS Fly, Funchal Roads.
Reports that the day after HMS Concorde left him, Captain George Barton having communicated intelligence, he sent a vessel to look out for the enemy. On 1 February that ship signalled 7 ships sighted and he judged them to be the enemy. He signalled that the convoy should make all possible speed but as the enemy grew closer he ordered the convoy to act to protect themselves. The next morning in very poor weather he found only the Ceres, the Aurora and the Betsy with him. On 10 February 1801 they met a French privateer that tried to seize the Betsy but fled when chased. In the Funchal Roads he found just the Susannah, one of the convoy. He set the letter with HMS Hussar.
