The Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) was set up under the Planning Act 2008 as the independent body that decides applications for nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs) in England and Wales , which are the large projects that support the economy and vital public services, including railways, large wind farms, power stations, reservoirs, harbours, airports and sewage treatment works. Its remit applies to Wales only with respect to energy installations and harbours.
The IPC began operating on 1 October 2009 by providing advice and guidance about the new application processes, and started receiving applications on 1 March 2010.
