The Government Office Network was set up in 1994 to bring together the offices of individual central government departments in each region and so provide a more efficient and integrated service by implementing policies and programmes on the ground, monitoring and reporting on local priorities and responding to civil emergencies. There are Government Offices in the network for the East Midlands, East of England, London, North East, North West, South East, South West, West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber.
In 2010 the Network was working for thirteen central government departments: Cabinet Office; Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG); Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS); Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS); Department for Education; Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC); Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra); Department of Health; Department for Transport; Department for Work and Pensions (DWP); HM Treasury; Home Office; and Ministry of Justice.
