Description

Part 2, Folios 72-77. An unsigned newsletter dated at Whitehall. The topics covered are:- the adverse effects both economic and general of the writs of Quo Warranto issued against the French Huguenot church in London and other parts of England; the unwillingness of lawyers to plead against the writ on behalf of the French merchants that support the London church; the upcoming trial concerning the dispensation granted to Sir Edward Hales to enable him to be governor of Dover; the possible effect of the quo warranto to be issued recalling the charters of the colonies and the grant of new charters 'wherein a latitude shall be allowed to the Roman Catholics'; the belief that courts martial will be continued 'as long as the Army and that no soldier henceforward will ever be tried by the Common or Statute law'; the charges against Mr [William] Williams former Speaker of the House of Commons; the 'untoward' situation in Scotland; the differences between the Earl of Tyrconnel and Lord Rochester regarding the impeachment of Mr [John] Price Vice Treasurer of Ireland. The newsletter ends 'Here are great designs in agitation against you and your interest. The inserted docquets will give you some light and make me once more think you so prudent as to assure you, if you will remit besides my due 200 as I have said, I will in one month's time give you such lights as that I will not doubt but to have a great share in Mr North's good opinion, and if you mean to be served make no delays, for many reasons I could urge, but in truth I am lately come to town and have not time, but pray send your resolution, without money it will not do'.
