Part 1, Folios 79-80. Letter from the Marquis de Caretto y Grana to the Prince of Orange. I send you the original letter of Monsieur del Valle from Bruges. One does not know what one ought to think about it. I have had the governors of the two threatened places arrested. The cavalry of Brabant will be given leave 1 September. It is the only disposition I thought I ought to make of them, the news from Paris and from the frontier being all uniform. Matters are better at Vienna, since Staremberg is defending himself like a brave man, who knows his business. Del Wale (sic) informs me of the conversation Louvois had with him. It is extremely ambiguous. (About orders to the Governor of Nieuport about the inundation.) What preparations can be made for war with few troops and less money? I try to give alarm to these poor people as little as I can. [Very illegible].
