Part 1, Folios 202-203. Letter dated at Windsor from the Duke of York to the Princess of Orange. He easily believes that the Prince might have forgotten the reason Lord Brandon had been in the Tower but others could not be ignorant of it or have such short memories and must needs tell the Princess that it scandalises 'all loyal and monarchical persons here to know how well the Prince [?lives] with, and how over civil he is, both to the Duke of Monmouth and Lord Brandon and hartens [heartens] exceedingly the factious party here which are a sort of people that one would think the Prince should not show any countenance to and in this affair methinks you might talk with the Prince, (though you meddle in no others), the Duke of Monmouth, Lord Brandon and the rest of that party being declaredly my mortal enemies, and let the Prince flatter himself as he pleases, the Duke of Monmouth will do his part to have a push with the Crown if he, the Duke of Monmouth, outlive the King and me. Some posts since I wrote pretty freely to the Prince upon this subject in general, to which I have yet had no answer, however it will become you very well to speak to him of it'. He ends by assuring the Princess that she shall find him as kind to her as she can desire.
