Part 1, Folios 176-177. Letter dated at London from the Duke of York to the Prince of Orange. The Duke believes that the Prince will have been no less surprised by the Duke of Monmouth's behaviour since the latter was ordered from Court. The King has informed the [Privy] Council of all that had occurred with the Duke of Monmouth, showed them the letter he would have had him sign and ordered the letter and what he had said to be registered in the Council books 'to satisfy the world of the truth of all that part and that the Duke of Monmouth had owned to him the knowledge of all the conspiracy except the assassinating part, of which he said he knew nothing'. The Duke was sorry to hear that the Spanish had declared war on France and fears most on the continent will be involved in it but England will do its best not be drawn in 'having enough to do at home'.
