Part 1, Folios 154-155. Letter dated at Winchester from the Duke of York to the Prince of Orange that before he had received the Prince's letter he heard of the French troops march into Flanders and does not see what is to be done since the Spanish 'will not save all by demolishing Luxembourg'. The Duke believes that the only reason the French invasion did not take place sooner was because of the King's intervention and had the people in Holland been of the same mind and the arbitration accepted, the invasion would not have occurred 'and all Christendom had been at peace and free to assist the Emperor against the Turk'. He says that there 'as great devils to deal with in England' and although some of the conspirators have been executed 'that party are as malicious and busy as ever' and therefore 'we here must look to ourselves' and not engage in any war abroad.
