Part 1, Folios 57-58. Letter dated at London from the Duke of York to the Prince of Orange about the English troops in Bruges. The King is apprehensive that the first thing the French will do is to besiege Bruges because the English troops are there and it would be a great blow if they were taken prisoners of war. The Duke is confident that [Louis XlV] 'would willingly venture the losing of a thousand or two of his men to take our old regiments' and therefore asks the Prince to consider either the Spaniards or the Dutch increasing the Bruges garrison or allowing some of the English troops to be withdrawn. The King and the Duke hope that before Parliament sits again Monsieur van Beuningen may have powers to treat both in England and the Emperor's and Spanish envoys because as the Prince knows 'we can do nothing without you'.
