Part 1, Folios 47-48. Letter dated at London from the Duke of York to the Prince of Orange acknowledging his letters from Macklin [Mechelen, Spanish Netherlands] and Boom [Spanish Netherlands]. The Prince's belief that the French were going to beseige Ypres has proved true but the Duke is relieved as he thought they might have taken either Brussels or Bruges and the Prince unable to cover both. The Duke is sorry that Ypres 'is so bad a place' as he had hoped it might have held out for some time and given the Prince a breathing space but at least hopes it will give him time to secure Brussels and Bruges. The King has no money to spare for German troops as proposed by the Prince and if he had it should be used to raise more troops in England. The Duke gives details of the current state of recruitment and assures the Prince he will do all he can to hasten things as he is very anxious to join the Prince.
