Folios 178-179: Robert Rolles, Hastings, Sussex. Reports that an enemy privateer chased a brig yesterday evening within gun shot of this battery and has been informed from Bexhill she was seen to capture a ship before. This is the second privateer seen here in the last week. Suggests that a lugger or cutter stationed at Eastbourne would offer protection to the trade passing Beachy Head which the cruisers from Dieppe and Boulogne most particularly watch. Suggests that a launch, like that supplied to a frigate, with a carronade and 20 or 30 armed men could afford protection to a chased vessel or retake one after she was in enemys hands. The Mayor of Hastings has promised to provide a shed for such a ship. Also mentions that the boats of this place are not calculated for the purpose described.
