The Directorate of Military Survey was established in 1943 and was responsible to the War Office for the production of maps and surveys across all Military Commands during World War Two. Subordinate to the Directorate in 1982 were 42 Survey Engineer Regiment Royal Engineers (established 1947). Force elements were deployed to the Falkland Islands in August 1982 accompanied by a Tactical Information Printing Truck (TACIPRINT), a mobile facility for the production of tactical and intelligence information overprinted onto a base map.
