Description

Prisoner name: Richard Lane.

Court and Date of Trial: Devon Quarter Sessions, October 1847.

Crime: Assault upon Thomas Cleeve of Silverton, farmer, together with Sarah Lane, Jane Hollett and Thomas Lane.

Initial sentence: Eight months imprisonment.

Outcome: Free pardon, 17 February 1848.

Petitions and letters: Certificates from William Drewe of Heale Paine, Bradninch, the prisoner's employer, and four others, testifying to his good conduct.

Petition from Thomas Cleeve junior of Silverton, the prosecutor, pleading punishment severe for crime and age, with certificate from chairman and committee of Silverton Prosecution Society, concurring in petition.

Petition from Scoble Blaisford of Castle Street, Exeter, pleading age, punishment severe for crime, prosecutor recommends mercy and time served.

Report from chairman of Quarter Sessions recommending mitigation on grounds of good conduct in gaol, with covering letters.

Notes of evidence, with covering letter from chairman of Quarter Sessions, recommending that prisoner serve no less time than his son, Thomas Lane, sentenced to six months imprisonment.
