Description

Captured ship: Hope of Rostock (master John Crosse of Rostock, otherwise Jochim Kross, Joachim Crosse, Kroos, Yacken Crosse).

History: a Mecklenburg merchant ship (unarmed, 4 men, 7 prize crew, built at Rostock), bound from Bordeaux to Leith, Scotland, laden with wine and brandy; taken on 20 February/2 March 1673/1674 between Lowestoft and Yarmouth by the Dutch privateer Exter [Magpie] of Flushing (Vlissingen) (Jeremy Boets commanding [otherwise Boat, Boot]), then bound for Flushing, but on 28 February/10 March 1673/1674 was forced by bad weather and contrary winds into Bridlington Bay; there piloted by a local boat to anchor near the town, the prize crew intended to deliver the ship to the local officers, whom the original master went ashore to fetch, but a storm broke the cable and at 10 pm that night the ship was driven aground about a mile and a half south of Bridlington; cargo salvaged (some damaged) by 14/24 March 1673/1674. One of the later certificates [CP12] - Edinburgh, 27 January 1674/1675 - states that the ship had been taken again recently, by a French privateer and brought into Plymouth, where the ship was then arrested.
