Description

Captured ship: Hercules of Yarmouth (master [Thomas Ingram]; prize master unknown).

History: an English merchant ship ([80] tons), bound from Newcastle upon Tyne to [London], laden with coal; taken [off the Dogger Bank] (one of 3 prizes taken by the captor at that time) about 5 pm on 3/13 October 1672 by the 6-gun Dutch privateer Maria of Amsterdam [otherwise Maria Virgin Mother] (Jede Pytterson Soet commanding), and sent in for a Dutch port; retaken about 9 am on 4/14 October 1672 about 10 leagues off the Brill by HMS Crown (Richard Sadlington commanding) and brought into Hull on 10/20 October. [The copy of the Dutch privateering commission was kept aboard HMS Crown. One of the 2 other prizes was also retaken, but afterwards foundered in a storm. The privateer and the third prize escaped.
