Description

Captured ship: Halfe Reider [Half Reeder, Sea Knight] of Bergen, otherwise Half Reader, Half Rider, (master Sewerd Herrings of Friesland (resident of Bergen), otherwise Sijvert Herijncks, Sijvert Herencks).

History: a Danish-Norwegian merchant ship (200 tons, built in Holland but partially burnt at Trondheim about 9 years earlier, the hull bought by Trondheim merchants and rebuilt there, used for 4 voyages then bought by present owners), bound from Nantes and the Bay of Bourgneuf to Bergen, Norway, laden with salt, wine and brandy; taken in the night of 4/14 May 1673 about 7 leagues east of the Isle of Wight by HMS Dragon ([Thomas] Chamberlaine commanding) and brought into Portsmouth on 6/16 or 7/17 May.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: two examinations taken at Portsmouth, 8 May 1673; mentions papers, bills of lading and freight books numbered 1-68, a packet, 2 letters, a notebook and journal (these were probably restored). An abstract was made of the papers, but this has not been found.
  • [CP 2]: copy of above;
  • [CP 3]: one examination taken at Portsmouth, 25 May 1673.
